More Than a Job: JP Singh on Living Outside the Lines

The truth is, some people were never meant to color inside the lines. Or maybe they did, once, because it felt safe. Practical. Expected. Until the lines blurred, the colors bled, and suddenly the world looked far more interesting without the borders.
JP Singh, the guest of Uncharted: Your Sidekick for Life, Season 3, Episode 6, is one of those people—a man who mastered the art of coloring within the lines, only to step back and realize the masterpiece lay just outside them.
"I've pretty much always wanted to be a lawyer," JP admits, almost apologetically. It's not the kind of confession that typically turns heads—except, of course, when it's followed by, "But I also did neuroscience. And startups. And music."
Wait, what?
JP Singh is the kind of person who reminds you that life doesn’t have to be a single track. Sure, the law called to him early, thanks in part to the gentle (or not-so-gentle) nudges from immigrant Indian parents who believed in two golden career paths: doctor or lawyer. JP chose the latter—but with the curiosity of a scientist, the heart of a musician, and the pragmatism of an entrepreneur.
"Doing something like law, gives you the resources to invest in yourself—to learn how to be a DJ, pay for studio time, start a business. It’s freedom, if you use it that way."
Freedom. It’s a word that threads through JP’s story—sometimes like a gentle stream finding its way, and other times like rain washing away the old to make space for something new. That detour wasn’t planned. It was gifted—by mentorship, by curiosity, by showing up.
"My professor, John Mixon, saw something in me. And one day, he just called me into his office. David Eagleman—world-class neuroscientist, PBS host, bestselling author—was sitting there. They said, 'Do you want to work with us?'"
And just like that, JP became the first research fellow in the Initiative on Neuroscience and Law at Baylor College of Medicine. A gap year—but make it intellectual. And no, it didn't derail his legal career. It sharpened it.
"Taking time to do something completely unusual added immense value. It wasn’t a distraction—it was an education."
JP's story isn't just about career pivots, though. It’s about relationships—the ones that challenge us, and remind us of our worth. He shares a formula, almost too simple to be profound, but undeniably effective:
Add value. Demonstrate competence. Ask for what you want.
"Mentorship, isn't about begging for help. It's about showing up, doing the work, and then saying, 'Hey, I’ve done my part—can you guide me from here?'"
It’s how he landed his first job, how he built his practice, how he’s continued to stretch the boundaries of what it means to "be a lawyer." Because JP isn't just a lawyer. His career doesn’t define him—it’s a bridge, one that allows him to express his identity across industries, to explore beyond the lines and engage with the world on his own terms.
Life is like a movie you haven't seen yet. Why would you want spoilers? The best parts are the surprises—the mentors you didn’t expect, the detours that become destinations, the moment you realize the trembling of anxiety feels a lot like the trembling of excitement. You just have to choose which lens to see it through.
So... What’s the movie of your life showing you right now? Are you watching passively, or are you stepping into the plot—unwritten, uncharted, and entirely yours to create?
