My interview with Neelesh began with a simple, introspective question: “Was I like this at his age?” His demeanor immediately stood out—calm, poised, open, and brimming with curiosity.
As we delved into life and aspirations, his commitment to self-improvement became unmistakably clear.
Neelesh, a 16-year-old high school junior from California, is not your average teenager. As an active member of DYC, an organization dedicated to providing resources and opportunities to youth lacking access to extracurricular activities, he has embraced a role that has shaped his character. His involvement stems from a genuine desire to belong, make a difference, and support those in need.
Alongside his passion for computer science, Neelesh also grapples with the challenges that come with pursuing his dreams. He is acutely aware of the competitive nature of his chosen field and the discipline required to succeed, yet his resolve to forge ahead shines through.

2024 marked a pivotal year for Neelesh:
“I just realized I’m growing older. I need to focus on not just getting my skills intact, but also just being a better person and a plus to society.”
As he said this, it struck me how much pressure we place on ourselves from such a young age. This pressure can be both a driving force and a burden—it propels us toward success but often steals the moments when we simply exist, breathe, and let go of expectations.
For Neelesh, the desire for self-improvement is rooted in his need to feel challenged. In a world that presents constant hurdles, his goal, even at just 16, is to strive each day to become a better version of himself. It left me reflecting once again: “Was I like this at his age?”
Neelesh’s journey teaches us an essential truth: the pursuit of growth and self-improvement has no age limit. Whether you’re 16 or 60, the opportunity to challenge yourself, evolve, and make a positive impact on the world is always within reach.
